Godmother of the Portugal Ocean Race
Few people capture the spirit of Portugal better than fado singer Mafalda Arnauth who has agreed to be the Godmother of the Portugal Ocean Race. It’s more than a symbolic gesture on her part.
Mafalda has pledged to be an integral part of the event from lending her charm and grace to the race, to adding her sweat and hard work to ensure that the event is a success, not only in Portugal, but around the world.

Chairman of the Portugal Ocean Race
Admiral Louw, head of South Africa’s largest naval base and long time advocate for all things Portuguese, will serve as the Honorary Chairman of the Portugal Ocean Race. His enthusiasm for ocean racing and the good that it can do to inspire youth is one of the driving factors for his involvement in the Portugal Ocean Race.
Secretary of State for National Defense and Maritime Affairs
As Secretary of State for National Defense and Maritime Affairs it’s a fulfillment to see once again Portugal in the front line of the organization of a major International Sail Competition. Benefiting from a National Strategy for the Sea and a privileged Atlantic location, Portugal has once again made it's way to the top of the sailing world. The commitment of its institutions, entrepreneurs and general population assure the best conditions to the success of the Portugal Ocean Race today as it already did in 2008/2009.
The organizing committee of the 2012 Portugal Ocean Race is developing a fantastic project as proven from the quality and quantity of the sailors that already stated their interest in this regatta, which is to be highly competitive. Portugal is a maritime country built upon the sea. It also has warm temperatures and fair winds. I can’t think of a better place to hold this event.

The person mostly responsible for the behind-the-scenes success of the Portimão Global Ocean Race was Dr Luis Carito, Vice President of the City of Portimão, Portugal. Dr Carito shared the vision of an around-the -world yacht race departing from the heart of Portimão and circumnavigation the world ending up back where it started. Dr Carito ensured that the Portimão Global Ocean Race had adequate support and funding the ensure that it would be a success. Now looking to the future he shares the vision of Brian Hancock and Ricardo Diniz build upon this success and grow the race to become an international event.
